By: Ramzan Chandio
KARACHI - The officials of power generation companies of the country have informed the Sindh Assembly Committee on Power and Irrigation that Sindh is surplus in power generation than total consumption of the whole province including Karachi, officials told The Nation.
However, the companies have attributed the outdated power distribution system behind prolong electricity disruptions in Karachi and other parts of the province.
Sources said that the members of the Standing Committee on Power and Irrigation of Sindh Assembly showed dissatisfaction over the response of the power companies regarding prolong power disruption.
During the deliberations of the SA Standing Committee to investigate the causes behind 20 hours power breakdown occurred in whole province of Sindh on June 17, 2009, the officials of power generations and distribution companies briefed the committee members about reasons of power disruptions.
It may be noted here that Sindh Assembly, during last budget session that held in June 2009, while passing a resolution, unanimously handed over the matter of prolong power disruption and above mentioned power breakdown to Standing Committee on Power and Irrigation for investigation. So far, two meetings of the committee have been held, in which officials of Hubco, KESC, Hesco and other power distributions companies briefed about the power generation and consumption of the province.
Arif Mustafa Jatoi, chairman Sanding Committee of Power and Irrigation of Sindh Assembly, while talking to The Nation, said the officials of power companies had informed the Committee that power production was surplus than actual consumption of the whole province. Quoting the statements of officials of power companies, he said that the total demand of Karachi is 2,400MW, against which total production is 3,000MW.
